Overview
Born in Catania in 1983, Massimiliano holds a master’s degree in Electronic Engineering with a specialization in Automation and Control of Complex Systems and a PhD in Mathematics and Computer Science.
Started his career in E-Distribuzione, the Italian DSO (Distribution System Operator), in 2011, he worked on the development of web/mobile applications and services for the management and monitoring of medium voltage network critical failure events, software platforms integration and new technologies applications to the medium/low voltage network.
In 2013 he was one of the winners of the first ISSNAF International Internship at Vision-Lab of UCLA in Los Angeles where he worked on Visio-Inertial Navigation systems for Robotics applications.
Since 2016 he has been working in the renewable energy sector for Enel Green Power, in the Innovation and Sustainability energy storage unit, working on control and aggregation strategies for energy storage systems based on machine learning algorithms, software platform architecture for DER (Distributed Energy Resources) management and optimization, Blockchain technology applications, microgrids controller and smart metering systems.
From December 2016 he has been selected as a Fellow of Enel Foundation, leading research project in the technology sector focused on Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence for distributed systems optimization. Massimiliano's fellowship research is based on combining multi-agent systems and machine learning technique for the optimization and coordination of distributed/stand-alone energy storage systems in hybrid environments.
In 2017 he completed his PhD in Mathematics and Computer Science at University of Catania dealing with research topics as distributed systems and software architecture, computer vision, robot cooperation and machine learning for robotics applications.
In 2018 he started his second PhD in Computer Science Engineering at Politecnico di Milano working on the optimization of distributed systems through the combination of multi-agent and machine learning/AI techniques.
From 2017 to 2023 he worked for Enel X, leading the energy storage chapter technical unit and the energy storage lab of Catania (Passo Martino), working on DERs aggregation and optimization techniques development and testing, energy storage system integration and related software analysis/design, energy storage systems modeling and predictive maintenance platform/algorithms development.
In 2024 he joined the Enel Green Power innovation unit, working on the energy storage systems technology, configurations, design, control/optimization systems, modelling and related applications testing/development while leading the energy storage lab of Catania.
