Overview

Carlos A. Nobre is a renowned Earth Scientist from Brazil, widely recognized for his research on the Amazon and its role in the Earth System. He is currently affiliated with the University of São Paulo and serves as Co-Chair of the Science Panel for the Amazon (SPA), an initiative dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge and sustainable solutions for the region.

Dr. Nobre earned his Ph.D. in Meteorology from MIT in 1983 and has since dedicated his career to studying the Amazon’s complex interactions with climate and the environment. He previously chaired the Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA), a landmark research initiative exploring the region’s ecological and atmospheric dynamics. 

His contributions to science have earned him international recognition, including memberships in prestigious institutions such as the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the Royal Society, the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, and the World Academy of Sciences. Throughout his career, he has received numerous accolades, including the Volvo Environmental Prize, the AAAS Science Diplomacy Award, and the AAAS Fellow Award.

Dr. Nobre is also the visionary behind Amazonia 4.0, an innovative initiative that promotes a new socio-bioeconomy for the Amazon, emphasizing sustainable development based on standing forests and flowing rivers.
